Rangeley Lakes Snowmobile Trail Report - December 29th

SNOW & WEATHER REPORT: Base depth (MEASURED IN Oquossoc): 20”. We are having a 24 hour thaw that has reduced snow base depths, settled our trails and produced trail surface conditions that range from wet to icy. We expect colder temperature for the remainder of the vacation period and snow Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

TRAIL CONDITIONS: Trails are open except where posted as CLOSED. Conditions are similar to spring conditions which can be icy in the morning and softer with occasional water puddles by mid-afternoon. We have not been able to groom for the past two days because of temperatures well above the freezing point. Grooming should begin Monday night as we get back to normal temperatures. Snow is expected
Wednesday and Friday with flurries on Tuesday.

WARNING: Lake riding is never safe! Rangeley Lake still had open water on December 18th. If you are not experienced and comfortable with riding on lakes. Don’t do it! The Rangeley Lakes Snowmobile Club has no trails on any lakes, ponds, rivers or streams.

SPECIAL NOTES:
The trail (Kamankeag Trail) joining the Oquossoc Rail Bed (ITS 84) to trails leading into Rangeley is currently and will be closed to snowmobiling until furthur notice. It is plowed, posted to prohibit snowmobiling and seeing heavy logging work and truck traffic. You will get a ticket if you try to ride it.

There is a truck crossing posted with stop signs on ITS 84 near where the trail crosses Route 17.
ITS 84 will be rerouted soon from the point where it crosses Route 16 as the trail heads out toward NH and Bosebuck. Watch for signs and please heed stop signs.

ITS 84 may be posted day to day about 20 miles north west of Oquossoc (heading to or from NH) due to logging. We will try to keep up with the situation and post a sign in Oquossoc when an if the trail will be closed. Ask at Koob’s Garage or Oquossoc Marine for the latest if no signs are posted.
